Time to come together!

Well I've been blogging on here for over 4 years now and I can't believe how quickly the time flies.

My very first blog was back in February 2010 and it was called 'Emotional fire in the belly stays with frontline staff."   My last blog was written just a month or so ago and the title for that piece of writing was: "What does a Funeral Director and a Celebrant chat about over coffee - non religious funerals of course!"  How different these two blogs are!

But as with anything in life - things change and new systems move us on.

You'll now find my future blogs all together on my website.  It was time to bring everything under one roof and make it easier for everyone.

So if you pop over to www.sinceremoments.co.uk you'll see a brand new page called 'news and views' - you might want to bookmark it so that you can easily find it in the future.

I look forward to seeing you over on my website - do keep in touch!

Thanks

Carole

What does a Funeral Director and a Celebrant chat about over coffee? Non-religious funerals of course!

Training Providers are churning out new Celebrants into the market place every month!
Every couple of months or so, I’m contacted by a new Celebrant either introducing themselves or asking for some guidance!

And year on year, my funeral portfolio work almost doubles!

So this week, I decided to grab a coffee with a local North Staffordshire Funeral Director, to ask him why he thinks our services are growing so fast!

Andrew Butcher heads up his family owned funeral home - Hopkinson Wootton Lovatt (www.hopkinsonwoottonlovatt.co.uk) which is based in the heart of Newcastle-under-Lyme.  He’s the younger of the two in the picture below! – and he’s got a good handle on the funeral industry and where it’s heading.
Here are his thoughts to the questions I asked him!

v     You and your family have been in the funeral industry for many years.  Why do you think more and more people are favouring Civil Celebrant led services?

“Well if you turn the clock back sort of 15 to 20 years ago, there was a very strong, set tradition for a church service.  Whereas now, people tend to go either direct to the crematorium, or to a chapel at a cemetery.  It’s more appropriate in these places, to have a Civil Celebrant,  Humanist or a Funeral Director who’ll conduct the service throughout.

People are favouring it, because it’s more of a personal token to the deceased, rather than a member of the clergy preaching to the congregation.”

v     When you’re with families, what triggers you to suggest using a Civil Celebrant rather than a member of the clergy?

“As a Funeral Director, you’d take in all the surroundings of that family, as soon as you walk into their home.  You look to see if they’re committed to any sort of church and then how you’d want to celebrate the life that’s just been lost.  This gives you the vibes for which route you need to take the family down and what help they’ll need, to help them say their last goodbyes to their loved ones.”

v     What’s the ‘best bit’ of a funeral led by a Civil Celebrant?

“It’s often the personal touch that’s always added in, or ‘off the cuff’ statements made during the service, which brings laughter or applause.  But as a Funeral Director, we have hundreds of different contacts ranging from Humanists, Civil Celebrants and Clergy.

You always have to remember – only use someone if you’d be willing to let them conduct a service for your own family.”

v     What do you look for in the ‘ideal’ Civil Celebrant?

“Well Carole, as you well know, I will not just accept a ‘knock on the door’ from someone who introduces themselves as a new Civil Celebrant.  I like to do my research on services they’ve done, their mannerisms, and how they conduct themselves.  They don’t just represent themselves, but also our firm.

At Hopkinsons, we have a very high standard which people have to work to.  We would never lower our standards and they always have to remember, that the Funeral Director is in control of the service.  They need to work as a team in a very successful farewell for each individual family.”

v     If you look ahead 10 years, do you see any trends or patterns emerging for what people will want from a funeral service?

“Yes and No!

The British are very slow on change.  We like tradition.

You have to remember, Humanists have only been strong for the last 15 years and Civil Celebrants for around 4 or 5 years.  People have started to notice it more.  It’s all about educating families about what they can have and what’s possible.

I feel that the next 10 years will see an incline to Civil services being held in more public buildings.  But as with most things and trends in life, everything tends to loop round in a big circle!”

****************************

So there we have it!

*      *  Civil funeral services are ‘personal’.

*      *  They’re not about ‘preaching’.

*      *  And the test for whoever you book for a funeral, is........’ only use someone if you’d be willing to let them conduct a service for your own family.”

My thanks to Andrew for sharing his time, his insights and his forward thinking in this developing area.

And if you're interested in how a Civil Celebrant led funeral can really make a difference, then do get in touch: M 07723 346 820 or Email carole@sinceremoments.co.uk

What makes a great eulogy?

A great eulogy is one that people will walk away from and still be talking about long after the funeral service has ended.

You don’t have long.  So it’s about pulling out those things that people will remember most.  Think of who will be at the service and write with them in your mind.  As much as this is a eulogy about a person, it’s also about engaging with each and every person in the room and they need to feel connected to it.

For the use of an example, we will assume you are preparing a eulogy for a lady called Lynne.

You want people to walk away from her service saying:

”That was just Lynne down to a tee!”

Your delivery of the eulogy is just as important as what’s said.  Although you will be talking about someone you’re emotionally attached to, so worry less about your performance on this occasion.  People aren’t expecting a great show.  They just want to hear something moving, meaningful, relevant and something they can relate to.

Some insightful questions to ask yourself

If you close your eyes and think of Lynne, what do you see her doing, saying or just generally getting up to?  How does she make you feel when you think about her?

What will you miss most now that she’s no longer with you?

What were those little things that just got under your skin? - her little foibles that made her who she was?

If you had three words to sum Lynne up, and only 3 words, what would they be?

When do you think she was at her happiest in life?

What were Lynne’s proudest moments?

How did she deal with challenges in life?

Some things to look out for!

People will remember how the eulogy made them feel.  They won’t remember a list of dates, jobs or names.  Avoid doing anything that looks like a scripted CV or a role call!

Try and find something to put in, that people never knew about Lynne - something interesting they can take away.  You’ll help the conversation to continue long after the funeral service.

See if you can find a common thread that you can wrap the eulogy around and keep bringing things back to.  For example:

“........they lived for their family through and through………….they were a pint half full person and not half empty………………..no matter what they did, they always did with enthusiasm………………”

You might then find this helpful as your starting point and your closing point.

Your eulogy structure – this all depends on the kind of life Lynne has lived.

Use the common thread approach above.  Starting with a main header and ending with it, helps to open and close your eulogy.

Start at the top of her life.  Find the point in her life that she was most happy in or most successful.  Start at the top - fill it in between - and then finish at the top.  Finish where you want people to remember her.

A chronological order of things might be suitable, so you could go from birth to the end of her life if that feels more suitable.

Use stories and anecdotes.  When we remember people in life, we tend to remember them because of how they made us feel and through stories………”Do you remember when she…..”  Find one or two small anecdotes that bring the eulogy into reality.

Writing to be heard, is very different from writing to be ‘read’.  Keep your sentences short as it helps you to breath easier.  Have more paragraphs in to differentiate your points.  Write as though you would speak it.  The grammar can look lazy in this style of writing, but it’s all about helping you to deliver it!

Put your eulogy into size 16 font and double space it.  If emotion gets the better of you and your eyes well up, there’s more chance of you being able to carry on rather than struggle with the text!

And remember, you’re doing the eulogy because people think you’ve got something important to say.

So make it one of the proudest days of your life!

Time is the greatest gift you can give anyone - so give it on Mother's Day!

Cards!..................Emails!....................Texts!.................Flowers!...............Lunches!.............however you choose to spend Mother's Day today - may the day be perfect for you!

It's a day with a focus.  It's a day that celebrates a role.  In a few hours my own Mum will be coming for lunch and she'll walk away smiling having spent time with her daughter, her son-in-law..........and the two mighty Newfoundlands!

The greatest gift you can give anyone is time - because it's the one thing that you give of yourself, that you can't ever get back.

So even when today is over, don't leave it for another year before you celebrate what you and your Mum have.  Because somewhere out there, just around a corner, is a son or daughter who no longer have their Mum with them.

And I bet they'd give anything, to be able to hold and hug her for one last time.

Death through a lens - Photographers at funerals?

Here's an interesting little blog that really tests our thinking!

We book a photographer for Weddings, for Christenings and for other big celebrations.

But would you book a photographer to be at a funeral for someone you loved.

This blog asks the same questions.

Why you won't find me behind a table at a Wedding Fayre!

A question I get asked many times by professionals in the wedding industry, is am I interested in attending various wedding fayres?

And my answer.....all the time......every time.......is a polite......... 'No, Thank You'.

Clients who book my ceremonies, do so on the basis that they've heard about me, or they've experienced one of my ceremonies direct - they've been there as a spectator and have felt the emotion in the room!

Sincere Moments has grown through recommendation and referral - in my view, the only way to grow a business successfully and for the long term.  I've never paid for any form of advertising or to pitch up anywhere and display my wares!

But the main reason you won't find me behind a table handing out leaflets, is because you can't hand out emotion.  You can't hand out feelings.  And you can't hand out sentiment!

Yes you'd meet me and I could tell you all about how I work.............but I want you to experience what I do either first hand, or talk to someone who has.  That's why 95% of my bookings come from people who've either been to one of my ceremonies, or they've been recommended by someone who has.

I quite understand why photographers, florists, stationery artists and the like, do attend these fayres.  If I was selling those products then I'd do exactly the same.  But I'm not.

So if you're reading this and wondering how you can get a feel for the kind of ceremonies I design and lead, do get in touch.  I can put you in touch with suppliers and previous clients, all who've seen and heard me perform a ceremony.

I wouldn't want you to book me without either meeting me personally for a coffee somewhere, or talking to someone who has used me.

That way, we both know we're right for each other!

Beginnings & Endings!...........Happy New Year.

Let me wish you all a happy New Year!

However you're feeling today...........be grateful that you're alive to feel it!

And no matter how much we reflect, no matter how many resolutions we make, to start something new we have to let something go in our lives.  There isn't space to do everything!

I hope your 2014 brings you your own success and happiness. - however you choose to measure that!

Happy New Year

My Top 3 Highlights from 2013 - 'One offs' with a difference!

Well it's almost upon us - that ringing in of the New Year.  Away with the Old.  Hello to the New!

But before I step into 2014, I've looked back over the last twelve months and realised a few things happened in the life of Sincere Moments  - things that are unlikely to ever happen again!

So here are my Top 3 Highlights from this year, in no particular order - each one with its' own set of emotions and memories!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will you marry me?

Back in April, I was delighted to design and lead little Oscar's Naming Ceremony.  Pete and Heather are just wonderful parents, deeply devoted to each other and their son.

But little did we all know, that Pete had something more up his sleeve for the big day!

Before the ceremony started, Pete took me to one side and gently said that he had something that he just wanted to say at the end to everyone - and could I make time for that please.  Of course! - I envisaged he wanted some space to make his own personal thanks to his family and friends.

But here's the shock......because this is what he really wanted to do:

There wasn't a dry eye in the room........as Pete turned to Heather............and thanked her for everything that she brought into his life......and everything that she'd become to him.  He loved her..........and would she marry him?  Little Oscar had no idea of the enormity of what was happening around him!

Needless to say the answer was a resounding Yes!........and I'm looking forward to helping them both celebrate their marriage next year.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dragon's Den Entrepreneur picks Sincere Moments as one of his favourite small businesses

It was April again that brought good news!  The business found itself in the spotlight for some local and national media coverage.

Theo Paphitis, the former Dragon's Den entrepreneur................picked Sincere Moments as one of his top 6 favourite small businesses.  That meant immediate access to Theo's international business network, to his other winners in the UK, and to his growing #SBS (Small Business Sunday) business network.

In November, I travelled to Birmingham to spend the day with him and other entrepreneurs......to hear his views on business.................and to receive my award from him.

During his speech, he made one particular comment that hit home to me.........."If your business doesn't rock your boat.........then go and get a job!"

Being a Celebrant certainly rocks my boat!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An intimate Renewal of Vows - for a most inspirational lady!

It was down in Somerset in June, where I was delighted to lead a Renewal of Vows ceremony for a truly inspirational woman.

Naomi Thomas is the founder of the charity The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation (www.weddingwishingwell.org.uk) - a charity that helps terminally ill people, to have the wedding of their dreams.  In 2010, Naomi found out that she had incurable breast cancer - news that simply wiped out all her future dreams.

On 6th June 2012, she married Graham.  A year later, and they decided that they wanted to celebrate their first year of marriage together with a Vow Renewal ceremony.  In Naomi's own words.....'We don't know if we'll have a second wedding anniversary!'

Away from all the spotlight and the media, Naomi and her husband Graham together with their son Devon, renewed their vows in the fabulous St Audries Park Manor House.(http://www.countryhouseweddings.co.uk/st-audries-park)

(Photos courtesy of http://www.martingillman.co.uk)

It was probably one of the most intimate of ceremonies that I've ever designed and led.  No audience.  No spectators.  Just two people lucky and grateful to have their time together.

Naomi went on to win the Daily Mail's Inspirational Woman of the Year award, taking her to Downing Street to meet and be congratulated by Samantha Cameron.  She's a remarkable lady who's making such a huge difference out there.  It was a pleasure to meet her and I wish her much strength in the times ahead.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So there we have it!  A year where I've met many wonderful people and been involved in many milestone occasions.

Every ceremony I take is as unique to me, as it is to the people involved.  No two ceremonies are ever the same - nor should they be!   I'm always humbled at the personal stories people share with me and how they allow me to turn them into amazing ceremonies.

To all those I've worked with over the year, you've all taught me something, you've all made a difference for me.

Thank you for choosing Sincere Moments to be part of your celebration.

Happy New Year to you all.

XCarole.

It's that time of year again...........time to reflect....time to stop and think!

Well that Christmas Eve hush has found its' way into our homes!

It makes us quite reflective. It gives us some time to stop and think.........So I just wanted to take this moment......to wish you all a very merry Christmas.

*   To all those families who I've helped say goodbye to loved ones during the year, my thoughts are with you all. Christmas will be a difficult time but you will get through it.
Remember.......your memories are one of the few things in life......that no one can ever take away from you. May they bring you much comfort and warmth.

*   For those special families and couples who I've helped celebrate new beginnings and the history you've shared together - I hope Christmas brings you all that you're looking for ......and a little bit extra too!..........Enjoy your time together......just like you always do!

*   And for those of you who've already booked dates with me for ceremonies in 2014.........I'll be in touch as we've arranged!........You'll be surprised at how quickly it'll all come around!

Wherever you are this Christmas and however you choose to spend it.........may it bring you contentment, warmth and happiness.

Merry Christmas.

A day in a Celebrant's diary......when she gets to meet a Dragon!

So on the 28th November, in the bustling city of Birmingham, I finally met my Dragon!

You might remember that back in April, Theo Paphitis, former Dragon's Den entrepreneur, chose Sincere Moments as one of his top 6 favourite Small Businesses on Twitter for that week.  That meant:

  • That I got to be in his business club with lots of tips, ideas and networking!
  • And that I got to meet him!

And here's the picture of Theo presenting me with my winner's award:

It was a buzzing and inspiring day!  The one thing that stuck in my mind after he'd given his talk.....was his quote about being in business:

"If it doesn't rock your boat........go and get a job!"

Being a Celebrant certainly rocks my boat.............and I'm just as attentive and proud of my next ceremony....as I was when I did my very first!

Ever wondered how a Tipi Wedding works?

I was delighted when I was recently invited to Guest Blog, on the growing demand for having your Wedding Ceremony in a Tipi.

So this weekend I put pen to paper for Jodie, Director of Sami Tipi, a midlands based Tipi hire company, on the topic of leading Wedding Ceremonies in these outdoor settings.

Ever wondered how it all comes together?

Well take a peek into the blog and see if it answers your questions.  It'll tell you how to go about tackling the legalities of marriage - which then sets you free to have your personalised Wedding Ceremony in a Tipi.

Age is only a number!......A blog from another site!

Well it's been 9 days since my last blog, and I was wondering which topic I should move onto next?

But then I came across this wonderful blog by another colleague, about age and it how we deal with it!

I couldn't have said it better myself.............so I hope you enjoy the message........and the momentum the author creates!
For me, the interpretation is simple!..........Be in the moment as much as you can......because that last moment you had............you'll never get again!

"I wouldn't have changed any of it for the world!".........Marriage at its' best!

"Marriage............life..........togetherness.......................partnership!

Many of the Weddings, Vow Renewals and Funeral ceremonies I design and take, touch upon married life..............short marriages...............long marriages...............and just what it was about them that made them so perfect!  And whilst every marriage is different and unique...................the answers I get boil down to some pretty fundamental issues!

  • That you stick at it................".......through thick n' thin!.....".  Marriage is for the long haul.............................so believe in it!

  • That through all the laughs and tears................you give and take!

  • That you never go to bed on an argument.....................every day starts afresh with a new day ahead of you!  And as one lady once said to me........."I always said.....Good Night.....and God Bless.......and then I asked him if I could turn over to sleep!"

It's not rocket science is it?  And yet they're probably some of the hardest things to do, in the struggles and challenges of modern life.

I can see and hear many of the families and couples I've worked with, sitting in front of me now, telling me all about their marriage.  I laugh with them.  Often they cry with me.  It's part of a story that's given them the life they've loved and enjoyed!

We all live in an era of choice.............information about this.............facts about that.........decisions to be made everywhere!  But when someone says to me......"that they wouldn't have changed anything for the world.........".................then isn't that what really matters at the end of the day?

The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation - Be prepared to be blown away!

Just in case you've not come across this charity......do take a peek inside. It helps terminally ill people to have the wedding of their dreams!

Grab a coffee and read all about its' founder Naomi Thomas .........and how despite her own c
ancer diagnosis .......she's made the charity what it is today.

I was privileged to meet Naomi and her family in June this year, when I designed and led a very intimate Renewal of Vows ceremony for herself and her husband, Graham.  They'd made their first Wedding Anniversary!

Be prepared to be blown away!

Walking down the aisle......but to what?!

So you have some choice over the song you walk down the aisle to!

You're thinking of current trends or favourite songs!

Or you might just be the traditional Bride who wants what's gone before.

If you're in the planning stage of your Wedding Ceremony, take a listen to this little bag of tricks from You Tube.  It's got a few traditional tunes that might just help you decide.......

A Barn.......A Bassett Hound Puppy......A Wedding just how they wanted it!

The beauty of using a Wedding Celebrant to take your ceremony, is that you have complete freedom to do exactly what you like!

Hold it anywhere you want!
Involve who-ever and what-ever you like!
And have it written especially for the two of you........no other couple in the land will have a ceremony like yours!

And that's just the kind of Wedding that Leicestershire based Phil and Philippa wanted!

They're two exceptionally creative people who knew from the very start, that they wanted a Wedding ceremony that reflected them - their values and beliefs and just how they were as a couple.

They wanted it to be meaningful, sincere, personal and creative, balanced with subtle elements of tradition gently woven through it.    They were a fantastic couple to work with and I'm delighted that they've shared their wedding album with me.  Here's a snapshot of some of the moments their photographer captured during the ceremony.

Imagine::..........rustic.......rural.......natural........formal and informal.........warmth.......topped with authenticity and sincerity.  That's how I'd sum them up as a couple.......and that's the kind of Wedding they had!

The barn all ready and waiting .......themed just how they wanted it.........
and they did it all themselves!

Think I'm having a little word with the Groom and the Best Man!

Here comes the Bride!

The rings are ready for their rightful owners!

I remember this moment well.....and what we were laughing about!

Little Olive the Basset Hound!
A moment for themselves...some relaxation!
"You may now kiss your Bride!"

Congratulations the new Mr & Mrs Lurcock!
Go safely.......Go gently.......Go make a difference with your lives!

And here's some of what they had to say after their celebrations:

"Thank you so much for playing such an important role in our day and making the ceremony so special and memorable.....................many assumed you were a close family friend or similar and that is also how it felt to us.

From start to finish, we felt that the most important part of our wedding was in safe hands - so thank you so very much for that..........."

So if you want a Wedding Ceremony:
  • That truly reflects who the two of you are!
  • That tells your story!
  • And that's personal to you.......
Then do get in touch.

You're two very unique people.  And you deserve a unique and memorable wedding...........something that your guests will still be talking about long after your anniversary date passes!

To Pray or not to Pray.....that is the question!

Whenever I take a ceremony - whether that be a Funeral , Vow Renewal, Baby Naming or a Wedding - I'm not cloaked or gowned in anything that resembles a religious institution.  In fact you'll probably find me in a black, grey or purple co-ordinated outfit!

So normally, people who are in the audience are a little curious as to who and what I am.   Straight away, they believe I must be an Humanist.  Because that's the language that's been around for some time.  You either believe in religion - or you don't.

And if you don't, then you're a Humanist, Atheist or whatever label you choose to give it!

I describe the role of a Civil Celebrant as someone who's 'Middle of the Road'.  Which to me, means that the world isn't so black and white as we'd like to imagine.  Religious or not - how about "I don't know!"

So people who book and commission me to lead a ceremony for them, know that they are completely free to include any aspect of religion or spirituality into their celebration.  They use me because they don't want the ceremony to be led by religious beliefs or by an individual espousing what should be happening in life.

To Pray or not to Pray - that is the question!

And if you decide to pray, sing a hymn, or have a religious reading, then make sure you don't book a Humanist to lead the ceremony for you.  It's simply not possible because of the belief systems of that ideology.

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty clear which option gives me most flexibility!

Tomorrow is never promised to anyone......go tell your Dad what he really means to you!

Texts........emails............cards being opened..............telephone calls..............visits!

Today............thousands of Dad's around the country will be smiling through Father's Day!

Your Dad is special..............He's unique................He's a one off.  How about ringing him or telling him face to face, just how much he means to you.  It's not as easy as writing a card or sending a text.............but he'll remember it more!

One day, you won't be able to do that.

And remember.  Just around the corner, there's someone who'd like to give their Dad a huge hug.  But they can only remember him.

Life is a privilege.  Tomorrow is never promised to anyone.

Be in the moment with your Dad!

Why I'm not afraid to ask the difficult questions!

"That's a hard one.......!"

Pause....................Silence................Looks upwards........................Looks outside..............Looks to the floor.

When I'm designing ceremonies with families and couples, I'm not afraid to dig deep and ask the hard and difficult, searching questions.  They're the ones that bring you to a sudden halt.......and stop and make you think!  And inevitably, they bring out some amazing answers..........and that all leads to wonderfully creative ceremonies.

Here's an example.

"How do you both like spending your spare time?".....is an easy question that gives easy answers.

"When time is your own.........what makes you laugh out loud.....cry with laughter..........or smile from the heart?" .......is a difficult question that really makes you think.

Chances are.........it also takes you much longer to answer the question....but that's OK - the answer is worth waiting for!

If you're happy to let me provoke your thoughts......and use your answers to create unique ceremonies.........then we're a fit!

Standard Scripts.......they just sheep dip!

I accept that we're all different.

I understand that we all choose different things in life.

And I can see why 'straight forwardness' can be appealing....

But I can't see why we should settle for standard and well used scripts with finger prints all over them, when we're holding ceremonies for life's key moments like births, deaths and marriages.
  • We are unique.
  • There is no other person on earth like us.
  • We cannot be replicated.
  • We all have a story!
The ceremonies I write, reflect this individuality......standard scripts sheep dip!.

They create stories that people love to hear and be part of......standard scripts aren't interested in anything other than speaking their words!

They build warmth and engagement with your guests and audience ........standard scripts don't 'do' engagement....they're written to just tell you something!

When I get my next call for another ceremony booking, I'll have one of these tucked away under my arm!........It's part of my working inventory!...................It's energising!....................And it'll help me to work with stories and individuality!

Don't settle for something that hundreds of others before you have settled for.  You deserve more than that!
